The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday (October 6) brought Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor in connection with its tax evasion probe against Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal, advertisers of the Mahadev online book betting application.
Media reports quoting ED officials said Kapoor allegedly promoted web-based betting applications through online entertainment and received payments for participating in underwriting and limited-time efforts for the application.
According to a PTI report, Kapoor also allegedly received money to perform at the wedding of one of the advertisers of the illegal betting application.
Early last month, the analytical organization had seized resources worth INR 417 crore in connection with the Mahadev application in the wake of leading activities at multiple locations in Mumbai, Bhopal, and Kolkata.
The ED investigation revealed that the Mahadev application was being run from Dubai and an internet-based betting application was used to enlist new customers and launder money through a layer of anonymous financial balances.
"M/s Mahadev Online Book is run from a central administrative center in UAE and works by diversifying "boards/branches" to its known partners at 70%-30% profit ratio. To redirect returns A large amount of hawala activities have ended betting on maritime records in India for the promotion of significant betting sites and self-grandiose promotions to attract new customers and institution (board) searchers,” the ED said in a clarification. “There is also huge consumption of real money.”
The ED confirmed that the app's advertisers spent Rs 200 crore in real money for Chandrakar's wedding, which took place in Dubai recently. He even used private luxury planes to send relatives from Nagpur to Dubai.
According to India Today, big Bollywood names like Bright Leone, Tiger Shroff, Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Bharti Singh and Neha Kakkar attended the wedding. Various entertainers and artists are also likely to be called up for the position, the distribution said.
While the organization's activities are restricted in India, the advertiser duo runs the app's operations in various countries.
While the ED is investigating the case, a PMLA extraordinary court in Raipur has also issued non-bailable warrants (NBW) against the suspects in the case.
According to reports, Chandrakar and Uppal, who are currently in the UAE, attempted to travel to Australia but were refused entry due to continuous scrutiny in India.
